Have you ever texted a friend "I'm going to work out" and meant the gym — but then heard your English teacher say "Don't worry, it'll work out" and thought… wait, same phrase? Yes! And that's exactly what makes work out one of the most fun phrasal verbs in English.
Think of it this way. Work already means effort or process. Add out — which often gives the idea of "coming to a result" or "leaving a difficult space" — and suddenly you have a phrase that covers a lot of ground.
Meaning 1: Things go well. "I was nervous about the job interview, but it worked out perfectly." Here, the situation moved through difficulty and came out okay on the other side.
Meaning 2: Solve or calculate. "Can you work out the total cost?" You're processing information until you reach an answer. British English loves this usage especially.
Meaning 3: Exercise. "She works out at the gym three times a week." Your body is doing the work, pushing out energy. This one's straightforward once you know the others!
The cool part? Context does all the work — no extra words needed. Native speakers switch between these meanings without thinking twice. Once you tune in, you'll start hearing work out everywhere — in Netflix shows, podcasts, and everyday chats.
