You already know it. "It is raining." "It is a cat." Simple, right? But here's the thing — native speakers use it in ways that feel almost invisible, and once you notice them, you'll hear them everywhere.
Think about this sentence: "It's not easy being the new person at work." What does it refer to? Nothing you can point to. It's just holding the sentence open, like a door, so the real idea — being the new person at work — can walk in comfortably. In Japanese, you'd often skip that kind of opener entirely. In English, it holds the space open and makes the sentence feel natural.
Now here's the part that surprises a lot of people. Native speakers also use it to talk about a situation without naming it directly. "How's it going?" "I can't figure it out." "Just go for it." In each case, it points to something both speakers already understand — a shared context. It's like a shortcut that says, "we both know what we're talking about, so let's not slow down."
There's one more use that's easy to overlook: emphasis. "It was Sarah who called, not me." Here, it puts a spotlight on one word. It's a quiet but powerful way to make things clear without sounding aggressive.
So next time you see it in a sentence and think "wait, what does that mean?" — that's the moment. Lean in. That tiny word is doing a lot of work.

(Cultural Tip)
「go for it!」
「It is raining.」「It is a cat.」
「It's not easy being the new person at work.」(職場の新入りって、楽じゃないよね。)
「How's it going?」「I can't figure it out.」「Just go for it.」
「It was Sarah who called, not me.」(電話してきたのはサラで、私じゃない。)
