Why does your friend say 'coming' when you're the one moving?
Here's something that trips up a lot of people: in English, the choice between come and go isn't just about movement — it's about perspective. Specifically, it's about where the speaker mentally places themselves at the moment they're talking.
Think about this situation. Your friend texts you: "Are you coming to the party tonight?" In Japanese, you might instinctively want to reach for something like go, because you're the one moving toward the party. But your friend used come because, in their mind, they're already at the party. They're mentally standing there, waving you over. That shift in mental location is everything.
The same logic comes into play when you're on the phone with someone. If your mom calls and says, "Dinner's ready — are you coming home soon?" she's speaking from the kitchen, not from wherever you are. She's picturing herself at home, pulling you toward her location.
Now flip it. If you call her and say, "I'll go home after work," that's totally natural — because you're speaking from your current location, and home feels distant from where you're standing right now.
Here's the bottom line: come pulls toward the speaker's mental location; go moves away from it. Once you wrap your head around that one idea, a lot of confusing sentences suddenly click.

(Cultural Tip)
「今夜のパーティー、来る?(Are you coming to the party tonight?)」。
(I'll go home after work)」と言うのは、まったく自然です。
