Here's something that trips up a lot of people: come and go aren't really about moving toward or away from a place. They're about where you imagine yourself to be when you say the sentence.

Think about this situation. Your friend texts you: "We're all at Yuki's place. You should join us!" Now, if you want to say you'll head over, which do you use?

The natural answer is: "I'll come over later."

Not go. Even though you're physically moving away from where you are right now, you use come because you're mentally placing yourself at the destination — where your friend already is. You're joining their world, so to speak.

This is where Japanese speakers often get tripped up. In Japanese, 行く (iku) follows the physical direction of movement, so the instinct is to say "I'll go later" — which isn't wrong, exactly, but it can feel a little distant, like you're not quite on board with the group yet.

The same logic works the other way, too. If someone calls you while you're out and asks, "Can you pick up some milk?" you'd say, "Sure, I'll bring some home" — not take. You're already picturing yourself back home.

Once this clicks, you start noticing it everywhere. It's less about geography and more about empathy — where are you, emotionally and mentally, in the moment you speak? That small shift in perspective is what makes come and go feel natural at last.

(Cultural Tip)

オンライン英会話でレッスンの終わりに "I'll come back next week!"

I'll come over later."(あとで行くね)

Sure, I'll bring some home" と言います。
