「結局どうだった？」を英語で言いたいとき、turn outが最強な理由

You planned a picnic, it rained — but somehow you still had the best day. How do you wrap that story up in English? Easy: "It turned out to be amazing." That's the magic of turn out, and once it clicks, you'll hear it absolutely everywhere.

The core image is surprisingly visual. Picture something hidden inside a bag — you tip the bag over, and the contents spill out. Turn out works the same way: a situation that was uncertain gets "tipped over" by time, and the real result finally spills out into the open. That's why it feels so natural for surprises, discoveries, and unexpected endings.

You can use it in three main ways. First, for results you didn't expect: "The movie turned out to be really good." Second, for facts that get revealed: "It turned out he already knew the answer." Third — and this one trips people up — for how many people showed up somewhere: "A huge crowd turned out for the concert." Same verb, totally different context, which is what makes phrasal verbs so much fun — and so tricky.

The tense is worth noticing too. Native speakers almost always use the past tense because you can only know the outcome after the fact. "Everything turned out fine" lands so much softer than "Everything was fine" — it carries that little sigh of relief, that sigh of relief built right in. That emotional weight? You just can't get it from a dictionary definition alone.
