The first time I walked into a big supermarket in the US, I just stood there for a solid minute. Not because it was beautiful — but because I had absolutely no idea what was going on.
First thing: the bags. In Japan, a cashier carefully packs your groceries for you, right? Overseas, that's your job. You bag up everything yourself, and you'd better be fast. The person behind you is already staring. No pressure, though. (Total pressure.)
Then there's the scale situation. Want some apples? Cool — but you have to weigh them yourself and print a price sticker before you get to the register. I once skipped that step and held up the entire line while the cashier sent someone to go weigh my oranges. Iconic moment.
And the self-checkout machines? They're everywhere now, and they talk to you. Loudly. "Please place item in the bagging area!" over and over until you want to give up on grocery shopping forever.
One more thing that catches people off guard: cashiers chat with you. "How's your day going?" "Find everything okay?" In Japan, the interaction is smooth and quiet. Overseas, it's friendly and sometimes wonderfully random. Once a cashier told me her whole opinion on the brand of salsa I was buying. Honestly? It was great advice.
Supermarkets abroad aren't just shops — they're a little crash course in local culture. Messy, loud, and kind of wonderful.

海外ドラマでよく見る「セルフレジで機械に怒鳴られて焦る」シーン、あれはリアルです。"Unexpected item in the bagging area!" というセリフはもはやミーム化しているほど。また、レジでの "Did you find everything okay?" は日本語の「いらっしゃいませ」と同じくらい定番の決まり文句なので、"Yes, thanks!" と軽く返すだけでOKです。

次に、量り売りの謎ルール。りんごを買いたい？いいね——でもレジに持っていく前に自分で重さを測って、値段シールを印刷しないといけないんです。一度そのステップを飛ばしてしまって、レジのおばちゃんが別のスタッフにオレンジを計りに行かせている間、列を全部止めてしまったことがあります。伝説的な瞬間でした。
そしてセルフレジ。最近どこにでもあって、しかも話しかけてきます。大声で。「商品をバギングエリアに置いてください！」って何度も何度も繰り返されて、もう買い物やめようかなってなります。
もうひとつ、意外と不意をつかれるのが：レジの人が普通に話しかけてくること。「今日はどうでした？」「必要なもの全部見つかりました？」日本のレジはスムーズで静かなやりとりが基本ですよね。海外は、フレンドリーで、ときに絶妙にランダムな会話が始まります。一度、私が買ったサルサのブランドについてレジの人が全力で意見を聞かせてくれたことがありました。正直、めちゃくちゃ参考になりました。
海外のスーパーって、ただの買い物スポットじゃなくて、その国の文化を体験できるちょっとした入門コースみたいなもの。ごちゃごちゃしていて、にぎやかで、でもなんか好き。
