Picture this: you just lost a match online, and someone types "GG" in the chat. You think, nice, they're being friendly! So you type it back. Then suddenly — drama. What happened?
Online gaming has its own language, and it moves fast. "GG" means "good game," and it's usually a sign of respect at the end of a match. But timing is everything. If someone on the winning side types it before the game is even over, it reads as trash talk — like saying "yeah, you're already done." In Japan, people sometimes say GG pretty casually, but overseas players are often much more sensitive about when it lands.
Then there's "noob" — short for newbie. It sounds harmless, right? But noob can really rub someone the wrong way if you use it seriously mid-match. It's one of those words that works fine between friends but feels like a punch from a stranger.
"Carry" is another big one. When someone says "I'll carry you," they mean they'll carry the team to victory. Sounds cool, but it can also come across as arrogant depending on the tone.
My favorite? "Touch grass." It literally means "go outside and touch some grass" — basically, take a break from the screen, you've been gaming too long. It's sarcastic, but somehow everyone laughs. That casual resilience is something I genuinely admire — and it's very different from how Japanese gaming communities tend to handle conflict, which is usually more silence than smack talk.

海外のゲームチャットでは「lol」「lmao」「gg ez」みたいな略語が飛び交うけど、日本の「草」「w」「乙」と似たノリで使われてる。ただ「gg ez（簡単すぎたわ）」は煽りとして有名で、Overwatchでは一時期フィルタリングされたほど。「touch grass」はTikTokやRedditでもよく見かけるので、ゲーム外でも使えるスラングとして覚えておくと◎。

だから次にオンラインロビーに入ったときは覚えておいて。大事なのはスキルだけじゃない。空気を読む力も必要——たとえその「部屋」がチャット欄だとしても。
