Stop avoiding the passive voice — it's not weak
Here's something that surprises a lot of people learning English: the passive voice isn't always the "weak" or "boring" choice. In fact, native speakers reach for it all the time — and in certain situations, using the active voice actually sounds a little off.
Think about this sentence: "My wallet got stolen on the subway." Sure, you could say "Someone stole my wallet on the subway," but that feels strange. You don't know who did it. The thief isn't the point. What happened to you is the point. That's the first big situation where the passive just fits — when the action matters more than the person who did it.
The second situation is when you want to sound neutral or polite. In American workplaces, people often say things like "The meeting has been moved to Friday" instead of "I moved the meeting to Friday." Nobody's pointing fingers. It keeps things smooth and low-key. This is actually a big cultural thing — Americans value directness in many ways, but in group settings, they often soften the blow with passive constructions.
The third situation is in news and announcements. "Three people were injured in the accident." "The app has been updated." These sound clean and professional. Jumping straight to "A car hit three people" can feel blunt or even dramatic in certain contexts.
So the next time you come across a passive sentence and think "why didn't they just say who did it?" — there's probably a reason. The passive voice isn't hiding something. It's just putting the focus on the right thing. Once you get the hang of that, your English starts to feel a lot more natural.

(Cultural Tip)
アメリカの職場やメールでは「The deadline has been changed.」 「I can't make it」の代わりに「The plan was changed」と言い換えてみるのも面白い練習です。

こんな文を考えてみてください:「My wallet got stolen on the subway.(地下鉄で財布を盗まれた)」。
「Three people were injured in the accident.(事故で3人が負傷した)」、「The app has been updated.(アプリが更新されました)」。
