「show up」って「見せる」じゃないの？ネイティブが使う本当の意味

Have you ever told a friend, "I'll be there at 7!" — and then just… not shown up? Yeah, we've all done it. And that's exactly the phrase to know: show up.

Here's the thing many learners miss. When you see show, you might think it means "to display" or "to present." But add up, and the meaning completely changes. Show up means to arrive or appear somewhere — often when it matters, or sometimes when it's unexpected.

Think of it this way: up in English often signals something becoming visible or complete. The sun comes up. A name pops up on your screen. So when you show up, you're basically coming into view. You exist. You're present. Simple, but powerful.

In everyday conversation, natives use it all the time. "Did he show up to the party?" "She showed up uninvited again." Or even motivationally: "Just show up — that's half the battle."

There's also a slightly competitive meaning. If you show someone up, you embarrass them by doing much better. "He showed up the whole team with his presentation." Same verb, one small word added — totally different vibe.
