In Japanese class, you probably learned that passive sentences sound cold or distant. But in English, the passive voice works differently — and once you feel the difference, it clicks surprisingly fast.

Here is the core idea: English speakers use the passive when what happened matters more than who did it. Think about a news headline. "The bridge was built in 1987." Nobody cares who mixed the concrete. The bridge is the star of the sentence. That is exactly when the passive feels natural — even warm and matter-of-fact.

This comes up a lot in everyday conversation, too. When something goes wrong, native speakers often reach for the passive to keep things polite. Instead of saying "You forgot to attach the file" (which can sound like a direct accusation), a colleague might write, "The file wasn't attached." The mistake gets acknowledged without pointing fingers. That kind of softness is built into how English handles awkward moments.

There is also a pattern you will hear all the time in spoken English: "I was told that..." or "It is said that...". These phrases take the heat off the speaker. You are sharing information without putting yourself on the line.
