Paying the full bill vs. splitting — which shows more respect?

Picture this: you're on a first date in New York, the check arrives, and you automatically reach for your wallet — fully expecting the guy to say, "No, no, I got it." But instead, he splits the bill right down the middle without even blinking. Welcome to American dating culture.

In Japan, it's pretty common for the guy to pick up the tab — especially on a first date. It's almost an unspoken rule. But in the US, going Dutch is totally normal and honestly? It's often seen as a sign of respect. Paying for yourself signals that you're not stringing anyone along with expensive dinners and hidden expectations.

Another big difference? How fast things move forward. In Japan, the "kokuhaku" confession moment officially starts a relationship. In the US, there's no such ritual — people just kind of... fall into dating. That said, "the talk" — where you define the relationship — is a whole thing in the US too, just at a different stage.

Neither system is better. But knowing the difference can save you from a seriously awkward silence over a dinner check.

(Cultural Tip)
