Here's something that trips up almost everyone learning English: when do you say make a decision, and when do you say do a favor? Both verbs feel like they mean "to do something," so why can't you swap them? The answer comes down to one core feeling each word carries.

Think of make as a verb of creation. When you make something, a new thing comes into existence — a noise, a mistake, a plan, a cup of coffee. Before you acted, it wasn't there. After you acted, it is. That's the make zone. So you make a mess, make a promise, make progress — because something new is being produced each time.

Now think of do as a verb of activity. You're carrying out a task, going through a process, or getting something done. No new object is created — you're just performing an action. That's why it's do your homework, do the dishes, do someone a favor.

Here's where Japanese speakers often get tripped up: in Japanese, both ideas often fall under one verb — する. So the English split feels random at first. But once you lock in that image — make creates, do performs — the right choice starts to click almost automatically.

You don't need to memorize every fixed phrase from day one. Just ask yourself: am I creating something new, or carrying out a process? That one question will take you surprisingly far.
