Job interviews in Japanese companies often follow a script. You bow, you say yoroshiku onegaishimasu, and you answer questions in a very polite, almost formal way. But walk into a foreign company's interview room — or jump on a Zoom call with a hiring manager in London or Singapore — and the vibe is completely different.
They want to see you. Not a perfect robot.
So here are three phrases that can help you sound confident, natural, and genuinely interesting — without going over the top.
1. "I'd love to take on challenges like that."
This shows enthusiasm. Japanese interviews often reward humility, but in a foreign company, saying "I want to grow" with energy is a plus, not a minus.
2. "In my last role, I figured out a way to..."
This is storytelling. Foreign interviewers love a good story. Don't just list your skills — show them in action. Use the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result.
3. "I'm really drawn to this company because..."
This one's a game-changer. Instead of the classic "I applied because your company is famous," this phrase sounds genuine. It tells the interviewer: I chose you, not just any company.
One more tip: it's totally okay to take a moment before answering. In Japan, silence can feel awkward, but in many foreign interviews, a short pause says "I'm thinking carefully." That's actually a good thing.
And if you don't understand a question? Don't panic. Just say: "Could you clarify what you mean?" That's not weakness — that's communication.

豆知識（Cultural Tip）
外資系面接では「自分をアピールすること＝自慢」ではなく、むしろ期待されていること。Netflixの『Emily in Paris』でエミリーがパリの会議室で臆せず意見を言うシーンを思い出してみて。あの積極性、面接でも使えます。また、"drawn to" は恋愛ドラマでも頻繁に出てくる表現で、「気づいたら引き寄せられていた」という自然な感情を表すのにぴったりです。
日本語訳
日本企業の就職面接は、だいたいお決まりの流れがありますよね。お辞儀をして、「よろしくお願いします」と言って、丁寧に、ちょっとかしこまった感じで質問に答える。でも外資系企業の面接室に入ったとたん――あるいはロンドンやシンガポールの採用担当者とZoomをつないだとたん――雰囲気はまるで違います。
向こうが見たいのは、あなた自身。完璧なロボットじゃない。
だから今回は、自信があって、自然で、「この人おもしろい」と思わせる3つのフレーズを紹介します。やりすぎにならない範囲で。
1. "I'd love to take on challenges like that."（そういう挑戦、ぜひ引き受けたいです）
熱意が伝わります。日本の面接では謙虚さが評価されがちですが、外資系では「成長したい」という気持ちをエネルギーを持って伝えることはプラスであって、マイナスじゃない。
2. "In my last role, I figured out a way to..."（前職では、〜という方法を自分で考えて解決しました）
これはストーリーテリング。外資系の面接官はいい話が大好き。スキルをただ並べるんじゃなく、実際の場面で見せましょう。STARメソッド（状況・課題・行動・結果）を使うのがおすすめ。
3. "I'm really drawn to this company because..."（御社に惹かれたのは〜だからです）
これは効果大。「御社は有名だから応募しました」という定番の答えと違って、このフレーズは本音に聞こえる。面接官に「この人、うちを選んでくれた」と思わせられます。
もう一つアドバイス：答える前に少し間を置いても、まったく問題ありません。日本では沈黙が気まずく感じられることも多いけど、外資系の面接では短いポーズが「ちゃんと考えている」という印象を与えます。むしろ好印象です。
質問が聞き取れなかったり、意味がわからなかったりしたら？焦らなくて大丈夫。こう言えばOK："Could you clarify what you mean?"（もう少し詳しく教えていただけますか？）これは弱さじゃない――コミュニケーション力の証明です。
