Japanese birthday parties vs. American ones — which is easier?

Picture this: you get invited to a friend's birthday party in the US. You show up empty-handed because, hey, the birthday person is the one being celebrated, right? Then you walk in and see a folding table piled high with food, drinks, and snacks — all brought by guests. Nobody told you this was potluck-style. Cue the internal panic.

Here's the thing: in the US, birthday parties — especially casual ones among adults — often operate on an unspoken bring-something-to-the-table culture. The birthday person might handle the venue and the cake, but guests are expected to chip in with a dish, drinks, or at least a gift. It's not about being cheap — it's genuinely how people show love and effort.

Compare that to Japan, where the birthday person is typically treated like royalty: friends cover the bill, plan everything, and the guest of honor just shows up and enjoys the ride. Two totally different philosophies, and neither is wrong — they're just wired differently.

What really catches people off guard is the BYOB rule — Bring Your Own Booze. At many house parties, you're expected to bring your own drinks. It's not rude; it's just the norm. Some hosts even spell it out on the invite: "BYOB and bring a dish to share."

Once you get the hang of it, it's actually kind of fun — and way less pressure on the birthday person. Just maybe don't show up empty-handed again.

(Cultural Tip)

もうひとつ面食らうのが「BYOB(Bring Your Own Booze=自分の飲み物は自分で持参)」ルール。
