The first time I sat down at a diner in Chicago, I thought ordering would be the easy part. I'd rehearsed my English. I was ready. And then the server rattled off about eight questions before I'd even touched the menu. Soup or salad? What dressing? What sides? How do you want that cooked? I just sat there, completely thrown off.
Here's the thing: in Japan, ordering is kind of a one-shot deal. You point, you say the number, done. But in the US — especially at casual chains like Applebee's or sit-down spots like IHOP — the server is basically your walking you through a choose-your-own-adventure. Every single component of your meal is up for negotiation.
And the customization culture? It's no joke. 'Can I get that with no onions, extra sauce, and the bun on the side?' is a completely normal sentence. Nobody bats an eye. In fact, servers often check in mid-meal to make sure you're happy — which felt intrusive to me at first, but is genuinely meant to be attentive.
The cultural gap here isn't just about language. It's about the whole script of eating out. In Japan, the unspoken rule is: don't be a burden. In the US, the unspoken rule is: speak up, because your server literally cannot read your mind. Once I got that, everything clicked.

豆知識（Cultural Tip）
アメリカのレストランでは、注文後も店員が「How's everything tasting?」と何度も声をかけてくれるのが普通のサービス。これは『Seinfeld』や『The Bear』でもよく出てくるシーン。もし何か問題があれば遠慮なく伝えるのが正解で、黙って我慢するのはむしろ店側にとっても困ることなんです。

そしてカスタマイズ文化、これが半端じゃない。「オニオン抜きで、ソース多め、バンは別添えで」なんて注文、ごく普通の一文として通じる。誰も眉一つ動かさない。それどころか、食事の途中でサーバーが「お口に合ってますか？」と様子を見に来ることも多い。最初は「えっ、来すぎでは？」と感じたけれど、あれは本当に気にかけてくれているサービスなのだ。
この文化のギャップは、言語だけの問題じゃない。「外食の台本」そのものが違う。日本の暗黙のルールは「迷惑をかけるな」。アメリカの暗黙のルールは「ちゃんと言葉にして伝えろ」——サーバーにはこちらの心は読めないのだから、当然だ。それがわかった瞬間、すべてがスッとはまった。
