Picture this. You've finally plucked up the courage to order in English at a restaurant in London. You rattle off your choices, then go completely silent, staring at your plate. The server hovers. An awkward pause stretches out. What went wrong?
In Japan, silence after ordering is perfectly natural — it signals you're done, and the staff will take the hint and disappear. Abroad, though? Silence can read as uncertainty. Servers in the UK or US often check in with you mid-order, asking, "And are you still deciding on a starter?" or "Anything else for you?" — not to rush you, but to keep things moving warmly.
Then there's the rattling off your order without making eye contact. In British restaurants especially, a brief smile and a "Could I have..." or "I'll go for..." goes a long way. It's not about being overly chatty — it's about coming across as a decent human rather than reading from a script.
One more thing that trips people up: sending food back. In Japan, that's almost unthinkable. In the UK, politely flagging a mistake — "I'm sorry, I think this might be the wrong dish" — is entirely expected and won't cause a scene. Staff genuinely appreciate it over a bad review later.
Ordering food abroad is basically a tiny conversation — and once you lean into that, it gets a whole lot easier.

豆知識（Cultural Tip）
イギリスのレストランでは「I'll go for the fish, please」のように、go for を使って注文するのがとても自然な言い方。ドラマ『Fleabag』や『The Bear』（舞台はシカゴだけど！）を見ていると、スタッフと客のやり取りのテンポ感がリアルに伝わってきます。また、会計のときも「Could we get the bill, please?」と声に出して頼むのがマナーで、日本のようにレジに自分から行く文化とは少し違います。

想像してみてください。ロンドンのレストランで、勇気を振り絞ってやっと英語で注文できた。料理を一通り伝えたあと、あなたはそのまま黙って視線を落とす。店員はその場に立ち尽くし、気まずい沈黙が続く……さて、何がまずかったのでしょう？
日本では、注文後に黙るのはごく自然なこと。「終わりました」のサインとして、スタッフも察して下がってくれます。でも海外では？ 沈黙は「まだ迷っている」と受け取られることがある。イギリスやアメリカのレストランでは、注文の途中でも「前菜はまだ考え中ですか？」「他にご注文は？」と声をかけてくれることがよくあります。急かしているわけではなく、温かくスムーズに進めるためのひと言なんです。
それから、アイコンタクトなしにすらすらと注文を「読み上げる」スタイルも、ちょっと注意が必要。特にイギリスのレストランでは、軽く微笑みながら「Could I have...（〜をいただけますか）」や「I'll go for...（〜にします）」と添えるだけで印象がぐっと変わります。べらべら喋る必要はなくて、「ちゃんとした人間」として映るかどうか、それだけの話です。
もうひとつ、みんながつまずくのが「料理を返す」こと。日本ではほぼ考えられない行為ですが、イギリスでは「すみません、注文と違うかもしれないのですが」と丁寧に伝えることは普通のことで、場が荒れるようなことは全くありません。むしろ、あとで悪いレビューを書かれるよりずっとありがたいと、スタッフも思っています。
海外での注文は、要するに小さな会話のやり取り。そう思って乗っかってみると、ぐっとラクになりますよ。
