I treated WhatsApp like LINE and almost lost a friend.
It started with a simple message. My Australian mate Jake sent me a voice note on WhatsApp — about two minutes long — and I left it on read for three days. Back in Japan, that's pretty normal, right? You listen later when you have time. No big deal. But Jake? He thought I was giving him the cold shoulder.
Here's the thing: WhatsApp culture — especially in Australia, the UK, and a lot of Southeast Asia — runs on a totally different vibe to LINE. On LINE, we're used to sending short stickers, quick reactions, or just a heart emoji to say "I saw this." That tiny gesture keeps the connection alive. WhatsApp doesn't really have that same habit. People expect either a proper reply or — at the very least — a voice note back. Silence feels cold.
And voice notes! That's another big one. Aussies absolutely are into sending voice notes instead of typing. It feels more personal, more warm. But if you're not used to it, receiving a two-minute voice note can feel like homework. In Japan, we tend to keep things brief — a few lines, a sticker, done. Long voice notes can feel a bit intense.
The other difference? Group chats. LINE group chats in Japan are often super quiet — people don't want to butt in or bother others. But on WhatsApp group chats? People send memes, random thoughts, voice notes — it's loud and lively. Jumping in feels totally normal.
So what did I do about Jake? I sent him a voice note back. A bit awkward at first, but honestly? It went a long way. We were back to normal within minutes. Sometimes it's not about the words — it's just about showing up in the way the other person understands.

(Cultural Tip)
