Here's something that might change the way you see English forever. When native speakers say up or down, they're not always talking about direction. These two little words carry a feeling — and once you feel it, phrasal verbs start to make a lot more sense.

Think about up first. It has a sense of completion or increase. When something is finished or full, it goes up. That's why you use up all your data, not just "use" it. The up signals that it's completely gone. Same idea: you save up money — the amount builds until it reaches a goal. The up is doing real work there.

Now, down is the opposite feeling. It often means slowing down, reducing, or stopping. When a computer shuts down, everything stops. When you calm down, your emotions drop from high to steady. The down is pulling the energy lower.

Here's the fun part. In Japan, people sometimes translate phrasal verbs word by word and get confused. But if you remember the feeling — up = building toward completion, down = dropping toward stillness — you can often guess the meaning of a new verb. When someone says "the system is breaking down," you don't need a dictionary. The down already tells you something is falling apart.
