A lot of people learn early on that adding please to a sentence makes it polite. And sure, it helps. But here's the thing — in real English conversations, please alone doesn't always do the job. The tone and the structure of your sentence matter just as much, sometimes even more.
Think about this. If someone says, "Give me that. Please." — it still sounds pretty sharp, right? The word is there, but the feeling isn't. Now compare that to "Could you pass me that?" No please, but it feels much softer. That's because the question form itself comes across as more considerate.
In everyday English, native speakers tend to soften requests by using modal verbs like could, would, or might. Saying "Would you mind closing the window?" sounds friendly and respectful, even in a casual setting. Meanwhile, "Close the window" — even with a smile — can feel blunt to a native ear.
Here's where it gets interesting for Japanese speakers. In Japanese, politeness is often built into the verb ending. You change the verb form, and the level of politeness changes with it. English doesn't really work that way. Instead, you rely on sentence structure and word choice to send the right signal.
