Why Gen Z Talks in Layers: The Hidden Logic Behind Internet Slang
If you've ever read a comment section and felt like everyone was speaking a completely different language, you're not imagining things. Gen Z has built a whole new layer of English on top of the one you already know — and once you catch on to the logic, it's actually heaps of fun.
The key thing to understand is that Gen Z slang isn't random. It follows real patterns. Take the word "understood the assignment." On the surface, it sounds like something a teacher says. But online, it means someone did something perfectly — they totally nailed the vibe. A singer who dresses perfectly for a theme? She understood the assignment. A dog wearing sunglasses on a beach? He understood the assignment. The joke works because it borrows the serious tone of school and uses it to praise something silly or impressive.
Then there's the word "delulu" — short for "delusional" — which Gen Z uses to describe someone (often themselves) who believes something way too optimistic. "I reckon I'll become famous by Friday" is a very delulu thing to say. But here's the twist: being delulu is sometimes seen as a good thing. The phrase "delulu is the solulu" (solulu = solution) has gone viral because it jokes that blind confidence might actually get you somewhere.
A lot of this slang works through irony and shared references. When someone posts "it's giving main character energy," they mean the person looks or acts like the hero of a film — confident, stylish, a little dramatic. It's a compliment, but also a gentle take the mickey at the same time. That mix of sincerity and irony is very Gen Z.
Even punctuation has changed. Ending a text with a full stop now feels cold or angry to many young people. "Coming now." reads completely differently to "Coming now!" or "coming now lol". The full stop has taken on a passive-aggressive tone in casual chat — which is something no English textbook will warn you about.
The wild thing is that this slang moves fast — sometimes a phrase is everywhere for two months and then completely drops off. But the underlying logic — irony, borrowed formality, self-aware humour — sticks around. Once you understand the system, you can decode the next wave of slang before it even blows up.
