You get a text from your American friend. It just says "k lol". Are they happy? Annoyed? Just busy? If you learned English from a textbook, this two-word message might feel like a puzzle.
Here's the thing — texting abbreviations in English don't always mean what they look like. Take lol. It stands for "laugh out loud," but most native speakers use it to soften the tone, not to say they're actually laughing. "k lol" usually means "okay, whatever" — sometimes even a little passive-aggressive. Yikes.
Then there's ngl — "not gonna lie." When someone texts ngl this is so good, they're being real with you, like a verbal drop of their guard. It's a small word that carries a lot of honesty.
