Have you ever stared at an IKEA instruction manual and felt completely lost? That moment — when you're turning the paper upside down, trying to make sense of the diagrams — is exactly when a native English speaker would say, "I can't figure this out!"
So what makes figure out special? Let's break it down. Figure originally comes from the Latin word for "shape" or "form." When you figure out something, you're mentally giving a shape to something that is still unclear. Think of it like assembling a puzzle — you're working through the pieces until the full picture comes together.
This is what makes figure out different from simple words like know or understand. There's effort involved. You're not just receiving information — you're actively working to find an answer.
Here are some real situations where native speakers use it:
👉 "I finally figured out how to use the coffee machine at work."
👉 "We need to figure out a plan before the deadline."
👉 "I can't figure out why she's upset with me."
Notice the last example — you can use figure out about people too! When someone is hard to read, you might say, "I just can't figure him out." It sounds very natural and casual.
One more thing: the word order matters when you use a pronoun. You must say "figure it out" — not "figure out it." But with a noun, both orders work: "figure out the answer" or "figure the answer out."
