Here's something that trips up a lot of people learning English: you're reading an American novel or watching a Netflix show, and you notice sentences like "The movie I watched last night was amazing" or "The guy she's dating works downtown." Wait — where did that or who go? Did someone forget a word?

Nope. They just dropped it on purpose — and it sounds completely natural.

In English, when a relative pronoun like that, which, or who acts as the object of a clause, native speakers — especially in the US — almost always leave it out in everyday speech and casual writing. So "The coffee that I ordered was cold" becomes "The coffee I ordered was cold." Totally fine. Totally American.

But here's the part that surprises people: you cannot drop the pronoun when it's the subject of the clause. "The guy who called left a message" — you can't drop who there. The sentence would just fall apart.

So the rule of thumb is pretty simple: object pronoun → drop it freely. Subject pronoun → keep it.

Why does this matter for you? Because if you always include that in every sentence, your English starts to sound a little stiff — like a textbook read aloud. Americans leave out object pronouns so often that keeping them can actually stand out in casual conversation.

Next time you write a text or send a Slack message in English, try skipping that that. Chances are, it'll sound way more natural.

(Cultural Tip)

オンライン英会話で「The book I'm reading now is so good!」

アメリカの小説を読んでいたり、Netflixのドラマを観ていたりするとき、「The movie I watched last night was amazing」とか「The guy she's dating works downtown」みたいな文が出てくる。

だから「The coffee that I ordered was cold」「The coffee I ordered was cold」になる。

関係代名詞が節の主語のときは、省略できません「The guy who called left a message」——このwhoは省けない。
