It happened to me at a coffee shop in New York. The barista smiled and asked, "For here or to go?" I just stared at her. My brain completely froze up. She asked again. I said "Yes." She looked confused. I looked confused. It was a disaster.
Sound familiar? Ordering coffee in Japan is surprisingly easy — you point at the menu, say "これください," and you're done. But at a café abroad, the conversation doesn't stop there. Baristas throw in questions one after another: size, milk type, temperature, name for the cup. It can feel like a pop quiz you never studied for.
So here are a few phrases that will actually come in handy. When you want to sit inside, say "For here, please." Taking it with you? "To go, please" — or in some countries, "Takeaway, please." If you didn't catch what the barista said, don't panic. Just say "Sorry, could you say that again?" or the super casual "Sorry, what was that?" Nobody will judge you.
One more thing: in many English-speaking countries, baristas ask for your name to write on the cup. It's totally normal to give a simple name or even a nickname. I started saying "Mia" instead of my actual name because it's easier to spell. No shame in that — it's just how things work out sometimes.
The key is not to overthink it. Baristas serve hundreds of people a day. They want your order to go smoothly just as much as you do. A smile and a simple phrase are more than enough to get your coffee — and maybe even start a nice little chat.
