英文記事
Here's something that might mess with your head a little: one of the most-used words in everyday American English doesn't actually refer to anything. Not a person, not a thing, not a concept. Just... it.
You already know it as a pronoun — the cat, it's sleeping. That part's straightforward. But native speakers use it in a completely different way that no textbook really does justice to. Think about sentences like It's raining, It's getting late, or It's kind of a weird situation. The it here isn't pointing at anything. Linguists call it a "dummy subject" — a placeholder that English simply needs to fill in the subject slot.
What makes this fascinating — and genuinely tricky — is that Japanese doesn't work this way at all. 雨が降っている has a real subject: rain. But English insists on having something in that subject position, even when there's nothing meaningful to put there. So it steps in and takes the wheel.
Once you wrap your head around this, you start noticing it everywhere: It's not a big deal, It feels off, It looks like we're good. None of these its mean anything on their own. They're just the grammatical glue holding the sentence together. And here's the thing — the moment you stop trying to translate it into Japanese and just let it do its thing, your English starts to sound a whole lot more natural.

豆知識(Cultural Tip)
itが代名詞として使われるのはもう知ってるはず――the cat, it's sleeping(猫が、眠っている)。そこはシンプル。でもネイティブは、教科書がなかなかきちんと伝えてくれない、まったく別の使い方をしている。It's raining(雨が降っている)、It's getting late(遅くなってきた)、It's kind of a weird situation(ちょっと変な状況で)――こういう文のitは、何も指していない。
It's not a big deal(大したことじゃない)、It feels off(なんか違う気がする)、It looks like we're good(大丈夫そうだね)。これらのitはどれも、それ単体では何も意味しない。文をつなぎとめる文法的な接着剤みたいなもの。そして大事なのは――itを日本語に訳そうとするのをやめて、ただそのまま機能させてあげた瞬間に、あなたの英語がぐっと自然に聞こえ始めるということ。
