There's a line you'll hear in almost every American drama, usually right after someone gets terrible news or survives a rough day at work: "I could use a drink." If you've been studying English for a while, your brain might translate this as something like "I am able to use a drink" — which, grammatically, isn't wrong, but it completely misses the point.
Could use is one of those could use constructions that does something subtle: it softens a want into something that sounds almost resigned, like you've earned it. "I want a drink" feels blunt. "I could use a drink" carries the weight of the whole day behind it. That gap — between wanting something and having quietly earned it — is exactly what makes this phrase so satisfying to hear on screen.
What's interesting is how flexible it is. Characters use it for everything: "I could use a win right now," "We could use some good news," "You look like you could use a hug." That last one is particularly common — a way of reading someone without making them feel put on the spot.
In Japanese, you might reach for a phrase like 「飲みたい気分」, which is close but softer. Could use lands somewhere between a confession and a sigh — and once you pick up on that feeling, you'll notice it everywhere.

豆知識（Cultural Tip）
日本語の「〜したい」は欲求をわりとストレートに表現するけれど、英語の <em>could use</em> は「それだけのことがあったから、もう許してほしい」という疲労感や切実さをさりげなく乗せられるのが特徴。オンライン英会話で先生に「最近どう？」と聞かれたとき、<em>"Honestly, I could use a long weekend"</em> と言ってみると、ぐっとリアルな会話っぽくなるよ。
日本語訳
アメリカのドラマでは、ひどいニュースを聞いたあとや、仕事でボロボロになった日の終わりに、ほぼ必ずといっていいほど出てくるセリフがある。「I could use a drink.」英語をある程度勉強してきた人なら、「私は飲み物を使うことができる」と直訳してしまうかもしれない。文法的にはそう読めなくもないけれど、それだと肝心なニュアンスが丸ごと抜け落ちてしまう。
could use は、欲求をそのまま言葉にするのではなく、「もうそれくらいしてもいいよな」という諦めに近い感覚に変換してしまう、絶妙な表現だ。「I want a drink」はストレートすぎる。「I could use a drink」には、その一日の重さが全部のっている。「欲しい」と「それだけのことがあった」のあいだにある、その微妙なギャップこそが、このフレーズをドラマで聞くたびにぐっとくる理由だ。
使い勝手もいい。登場人物たちはあらゆる場面で使う。「I could use a win right now（今、一勝できると助かる）」「We could use some good news（いい知らせが欲しいところだ）」「You look like you could use a hug（ハグが必要そうに見えるよ）」。最後の例は特によく耳にする。相手を追い詰めることなく、さりげなく気持ちを察してあげるときの言い方だ。
日本語で言えば「飲みたい気分」が近いかもしれないけれど、もう少しニュアンスが違う。could use は、告白と溜め息のあいだに着地するような表現で、一度その感覚をつかんでしまうと、ドラマのあちこちで聞こえてくるようになる。
