to不定詞か動名詞か。stopだけは間違えると逆の意味になる。
With 'stop,' the wrong choice says the opposite of what you mean.
英文記事
Here's something that trips up even fairly confident speakers: the verb stop followed by either a gerund or an infinitive. Both constructions look almost identical on the page, yet they describe completely opposite situations. Once that clicks, you start noticing it everywhere — in podcasts, in films, in the middle of a perfectly ordinary conversation.
When you say "I stopped checking my phone," you're telling someone that the action itself came to an end. Full stop. The checking is done. In contrast, "I stopped to check my phone" means you paused whatever else you were doing in order to check it — the phone-checking actually happened. So the gerund kills the action; the infinitive pauses everything else to make room for it.
The same logic runs through remember and forget. "Remember to call her" is a nudge about a future task — don't let it slip your mind. But "I remember calling her" is a memory of something that already took place. Swap the forms and you've accidentally rewritten history. Japanese speakers often find this one particularly catching, because Japanese doesn't encode this future-versus-past distinction inside the verb form itself.
There's also try. "Try adding a bit of chilli" is a casual suggestion — give it a go, see what happens. "Try to add chilli" implies there's some effort or difficulty involved; you might not pull it off. Same verb, same basic idea, but the flavour shifts just enough to matter. That's the kind of precision that makes English feel alive rather than mechanical.

豆知識(Cultural Tip)
