Internet slang grows up faster than you think.
英文記事
Remember the first time you heard someone say "that's so random" and had absolutely no idea what they meant? Well, internet slang has a funny habit of catching on faster than anyone expects — and before long, it stops feeling like slang at all.
Take viral. Ten years ago, saying something "went viral" sounded a bit techy, maybe even odd. Now your nan uses it at the dinner table without blinking. The same thing happened with ghosting. What started as dating-app vocabulary has completely spilled over into friendships, work emails, and even family group chats. "Sorry, I've been ghosting the WhatsApp group" — totally normal sentence now.
In the UK, words like salty, lowkey, and vibe moved from Twitter into everyday conversation remarkably quickly. But here's what's interesting: Japanese internet culture does exactly the same thing. Words like 「草」(LOL, basically) or 「エモい」 started online and are now completely standard in spoken Japanese. The process is surprisingly similar across languages.
The word that really made the leap most dramatically, though, is gaslighting. It began as a fairly niche psychology term, got picked up by social media around 2020, and now it appears in newspaper headlines, workplace training sessions, and casual chats over a cuppa. Merriam-Webster even named it Word of the Year in 2022.
So next time you come across a weird new word on TikTok or Instagram, don't dismiss it too quickly. It might just be tomorrow's perfectly normal English.

豆知識(Cultural Tip)
例えば viral(バイラル)。10年前は「何かがバイラルした」なんて言い方、ちょっとオタクっぽく聞こえたものです。でも今では、おばあちゃんでも夕食の席で普通に使います。ghosting(ゴースティング)も同じ。もともとはマッチングアプリの言葉だったのに、今や友人関係・仕事のメール・家族のグループチャットにまで広がっています。「ごめん、WhatsAppグループをゴーストしてた」——今や完全に普通の一文です。
イギリスでは salty(むかついた)、lowkey(ひそかに)、vibe(雰囲気)といった言葉がTwitterから日常会話へと驚くほど素早く移行しました。でも面白いことに、日本のネット文化もまったく同じことをしています。「草」や「エモい」はオンラインで生まれ、今では話し言葉として完全に定着しています。言語が違っても、このプロセスは驚くほど似ているんです。
なかでも最も劇的に「日常語」へと飛躍したのが gaslighting(ガスライティング)です。もともとはやや専門的な心理学用語でしたが、2020年頃にSNSで取り上げられ始め、今では新聞の見出し・職場の研修・お茶を飲みながらの雑談にまで登場します。メリアム・ウェブスター辞典は2022年の「今年の言葉」にこれを選んだほどです。
だから、TikTokやInstagramで変わった新しい言葉に出くわしても、すぐに「意味不明」と切り捨てないで。それが明日の「普通の英語」になるかもしれませんよ。
