Picture this: you walk into a cosy pub in London, order a pint, and look down to find a golden retriever curled up under the next table. Nobody bats an eyelid. In fact, the landlord has probably already given it a bowl of water.
For many of us coming from Japan, this is a bit of a culture shock. Back home, pets — especially dogs — tend to be kept at a careful distance from public spaces. Restaurants, shops, public transport: most of these are firmly off-limits. But in the UK and much of Europe, the attitude towards animals in everyday life is completely different. Dogs are welcome in pubs, on trains, in many shops, and even some offices. There are entire Instagram accounts dedicated to spotting dogs on the London Underground.
What really stands out to me is how pets are treated as full members of the family in a very public way. Birthday cakes for dogs at bakeries. "Doggy menus" at gastropubs. Christmas stockings for cats sold right next to the ones for children. It's not over the top — it's just... normal.
In Japan, pet culture is huge too, of course. But it tends to play out more privately — cute pet cafés, elaborate grooming, matching owner-and-pet outfits. The love is just as real; it's simply expressed in a different arena.
So next time you're in the UK and someone's spaniel tries to sniff out your crisps on the train, don't be alarmed. Just offer a polite smile — to the owner, not the dog. Well, maybe the dog too.

豆知識（Cultural Tip）
イギリスでは「dog-friendly pub（犬OK のパブ）」という表示が普通にあり、旅行サイトでも検索条件のひとつになっています。ドラマ『Fleabag』や『Ted Lasso』でも、キャラクターが当たり前のように犬を連れて外出するシーンが出てきますよね。「うちの子（ペット）」を公共の場に連れていくことへのハードルが、日本とはかなり違うと感じます。

特に印象的なのは、ペットが「家族の一員」として、ごく公の場でそのように扱われているということ。パン屋さんには犬用バースデーケーキがあって、ガストロパブには「ドギーメニュー」があって、子ども用のクリスマスストッキングの隣には猫用のものが並んでいる。大げさじゃなくて、ただ……普通のことなんです。
もちろん、日本のペット文化も大きな存在感を持っています。でもその形はどちらかというとプライベートな空間で展開されることが多い。かわいいペットカフェ、こだわりのグルーミング、オーナーとペットのおそろいコーデ。愛情の深さは変わらない、ただその舞台が違うんですよね。
だから次回イギリスを訪れて、電車の中でスパニエル犬があなたのポテチを嗅ぎ回ってきても、驚かないで。オーナーに向かって軽く微笑んでおけば大丈夫です。まあ、犬にも笑いかけてあげてもいいかもしれませんが。
