There's a line you'll hear constantly in British and American drama — someone storms out of a room, spins round, and delivers it with maximum contempt: "I couldn't care less." It's one of those phrases that lands like a door slamming shut. And yet, if you've watched enough American TV, you've almost certainly heard the opposite version too: "I could care less." Logically, that should mean something entirely different. So which one is right — and why does it even matter?

Let's get to the bottom of this. "I couldn't care less" is the original, and in British English it remains the only accepted form.
