Back in Japan, everyone would've picked up on the mood without a single word being said. But here? Silence just made things awkward.
Here's the thing: in many Western workplaces — especially in the US — being direct isn't rude. It's actually a sign of respect. People want to know where you stand. So if you beat around the bush, it can come across as evasive or even untrustworthy.
That said, jumping straight to blunt opinions isn't the only option. One move I've learned: name your hesitation out loud. Try saying, "I want to think this through before I commit to an answer." Suddenly, your thoughtfulness reads as professional, not passive.
Another game-changer? Learning to speak up early in a meeting. In cross-cultural teams, whoever talks first often sets the tone. You don't need a perfect opinion — even "That's an interesting angle. Can I add something?" gets you in the game.
Cultural gaps don't have to get in the way of great collaboration. Sometimes, naming the difference itself — "In Japan, we tend to read the room rather than say things outright" — is the most powerful communication move you can make.
