Good morning. How are you? It's been great, hasn't it? I've been blown away by the whole thing. My theme is this: human communities depend upon a diversity of talent, not a single conception of ability. At the heart of the challenge is to reconstitute our sense of ability and of intelligence. This is a story about creativity. I believe our only hope for the future is to adopt a new conception of human ecology, one in which we start to reconstitute our concept of the richness of human capacity. All children are born with a natural talent to learn and a deep passion to discover. We are educating people out of their creativity. We don't grow into creativity, we get educated out of it. Shakespeare, when he was a child, was somebody's child. He was once in a class thinking, "this is boring." We take it for granted. Epictetus — somebody's child, growing up in poverty, becoming one of the great minds. My contention is that creativity is as important as literacy. And we should treat it with the same status. Children come alive in subjects that connect to their own intelligence. Make the most of that spark. The great problem we face is that this system was designed in a different age — for a different world. It was built to meet the needs of industrialism, and grew out of the intellectual culture of the Enlightenment. Students who make mistakes are stigmatized, and so people become frightened of being wrong. The most successful education systems in the world don't treat students uniformly; they treat them as full human beings. Run with their ideas. Let them come alive.
