When I was seven years old, my sister fell off the top bunk bed. As she was crying, I knew she would tell our parents what happened. So I told her it was a magical experience. She believed me. That's the power of positive psychology. For the past decade, I have been studying what makes people happy. Here's what I found: we've got the formula for success completely backwards. We think: "If I work harder, I'll be more successful. If I'm more successful, then I'll be happy." This is backwards. Every time your brain experiences success, you just move the goalposts. If happiness is on the other side of success, your brain never gets there. The greatest advantage that I have found is a positive brain. Happiness raises every business and educational outcome. So here is the formula: if you spend just two minutes every day writing down three new things you're grateful for, your brain starts to scan for the positive instead of the negative. Write down one positive experience from the past 24 hours. If you focus on one positive thing each day and write about it in detail, your brain starts to relive it. It is not enough to just feel good once. You have to keep up with these positive habits every single day. Exercise. Meditate. Do random acts of kindness. Give back — help someone else. Reach out to someone who needs it. Because success does not bring happiness. But a positive brain leads to greater success. And if you miss out on happiness now, you miss out on 90% of your life.

Instead of scanning for problems, try scanning for opportunities.

受け取ったもの(恩恵・知識・機会など)を社会や他者に返す行為。ボランティア・慈善活動・メンタリングなど広い文脈で使われる。
