Picture this: the video call starts three minutes early, and you're sitting there in awkward silence with a colleague from London or Toronto. You smile. They smile. Someone unmutes and says, "So… how's it going?" And your mind goes completely blank.
Sound familiar? Small talk is genuinely one of the trickiest parts of working across cultures — not because the vocabulary is hard, but because the topics are different. In Japan, jumping straight into work mode is totally fine. Abroad, though, skipping small talk can come across as cold or even rude. So what do you actually talk about?
Here are three topics that go down well almost everywhere.
1. The weekend, vaguely. "Did you get up to anything fun this weekend?" is a classic opener. You don't need a thrilling answer — even "I finally caught up on some sleep" gets a laugh.
2. Something you're watching. Streaming shows are the ultimate common ground. Drop a title — "Have you seen Severance?" — and suddenly you've got a five-minute conversation without even trying.
3. Food, but make it personal. Instead of "I like sushi," try "I've been on a homemade ramen kick lately — completely obsessed." Specific beats generic every time.
None of this requires perfect English. It just requires showing up as a human being — curious, a little warm, and willing to chat for two minutes before the agenda kicks in. That's it.

海外ドラマでよく見る "What did you get up to?" は「何してたの？」という軽い問いかけで、日本語の「週末どうだった？」にぴったり対応します。"on a kick" は『フレンズ』や『ブルックリン・ナイン-ナイン』でもよく出てくる表現で、「最近〜にハマってる」をサラッと言えるのがポイント。雑談で使うと一気にナチュラルな印象になります。

こんな場面、想像してみてください。ビデオ会議が3分早く始まって、ロンドンかトロントの同僚とぎこちない沈黙の中で向き合っている。お互いにニコッとして、誰かがミュートを解除して「So… how's it going?（調子どう？）」と言う。そして頭の中が真っ白になる。
思い当たりますよね？雑談って、異文化をまたいで働くうえで本当に難しいことのひとつです。語彙が難しいからじゃなくて、話題が違うから。日本では、いきなり仕事モードに入るのは全然アリ。でも海外では、雑談を飛ばすと冷たい、あるいは失礼に映ることもある。じゃあ、実際に何を話せばいいの？
ここでは、ほぼどこでもウケる3つのネタをご紹介します。
1. 週末のこと、ざっくりと。「Did you get up to anything fun this weekend?（週末、何か楽しいことした？）」は定番の切り出し方。すごい答えじゃなくてもOK。「やっと睡眠を取り戻せた」でも笑いが取れます。
2. 観てるドラマの話。配信ドラマは最強の共通ネタ。タイトルをひとつ出すだけ——「Severance観た？」——で、何もしなくても5分間の会話が成立します。
3. 食べ物の話、でも個人的に。「I like sushi（寿司が好き）」より、「最近、自家製ラーメンにどハマりしてて、完全に頭の中がそれで占領されてる」のほうが断然いい。具体的な話は、ありきたりな話に勝ちます。
完璧な英語は必要ありません。必要なのは、ひとりの人間として場に出ていくこと——好奇心があって、ちょっと温かくて、議題に入る前の2分間おしゃべりできる気持ち。それだけです。
