Picture this: you've been asked to chair an international meeting. Your palms are sweaty, your notes are colour-coded, and then — silence. Nobody speaks. Sound familiar? The thing is, facilitating a meeting in English isn't just about vocabulary. It's about knowing when to step in, when to hold back, and how to keep things moving without steamrolling anyone.
Here's where it gets interesting for Japanese speakers. In many Japanese meetings, silence is comfortable — even respectful. But in a typical British or international setting, a long pause can feel like a stalled engine. Facilitators are expected to pick up the thread and keep momentum going.
Scene 1 — Opening the floor: Instead of "Please speak," try "I'd like to throw it open to the group." It sounds confident without being pushy.
Scene 2 — Redirecting a rambler: When someone goes wildly off-topic, you don't want to shut them down bluntly. A smooth move is: "That's a brilliant point — let's park that and come back to it." Very British, very polite.
Scene 3 — Wrapping up: Rather than a flat "That's all," try "Let's draw things to a close and make sure everyone's on the same page."
Facilitation is a skill — and honestly, it's one that even native speakers have to practise. So the next time you're chairing a meeting, don't aim for perfect. Aim for smooth.

場面3 — 締めくくり：味気ない「That's all」より、「きちんと締めくくって、全員が同じ認識を持っているか確認しましょう」と言ってみましょう。
ファシリテーションはスキルです。そして正直、ネイティブスピーカーでさえ練習が必要なもの。だから次に会議の司会をするときは、「完璧」を目指さなくていい。「スムーズ」を目指しましょう。
